Visualize It!

Hi,

I recently purchased a great book on the use of imagery and visualisation in therapy.......the use of these techniques can be found in most therapeutic interventions (such as hypnosis, CBT, EMDR and a most other psychotherapies). But it is a powerful technique all on its own! Its also simple to use.

For example if you are struggling with a project:

Just sit back......take a moment and perhaps just breath for a while....

Now imagine that you are running a film in your mind.....this film is in full colour and perhaps its 'smelly vision' too...you can use all your senses.

The film is the full activity that is required to complete your project.......allow the film to run as though you are the camera person.

Watch the film forwards - see it on a large screen in front of you...take it to completion and see your face and the face of others as it is a success....feel positive in having completed this task.

Now rewind the film and watch it backwards....check that you have not missed any important steps....see things differently than in forward motion and note how this feels. Now run through the film again in forward motion but this time take the role of director and edit each section.....break the film down into small manageable goals.....each step cut and log that goal.

Now take a pen....write down each goal on a paper and next to each goal write down how you are going to reward yourself as each goal is achieved......do this to completion.

Again run the film.......on that big screen....and see each section and each completion....each reward.......and complete the task you have set.......

Practise this several times each week.....and measure your success!

Bryan

Sports Performance

Hi,

I recently went to see a physiotherapist for my feet. I have flat feet and painful arches – together this really causes me problems with my running. So the therapist helped me by creating an insole for my trainers. Great stuff – really helped. But this made me think – what about those sporty people out there who overcome the physical side of the injury but still find it difficult to move beyond the psychological barriers – negative thoughts, beliefs, avoidance, poor performance, and poor motivation! Well EMDR – that is eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing can help!! Have a look at my web page: http://www.dalgleishtherapies.co.uk/EMDR.html

Keep Running

Bryan

A Break In!

Saturday some strange things happened. The day

started with me checking out how much my car insurance would cost this year. I was excited to find that it would be reduced - as I had a further no years claims and my last claim was over 5 years ago! How things can change in a short time. We parked in town at St George's car park and met a friend for lunch. I say lunch - that sounds a bit over the top - a sandwich and a drink. Although our friend is so so healthy - he had a skinny hot chocholat - which he would "work off later at the gym"! Anyhow....on leaving my partner said to our friend...."you have parked at the bus station"? - "yes came the reply"......."Oh - you know it could get broken into there"....... We shopped a little and later returned to our car.......two fab and kind women stood by the car......"you have been broken into". Someone had smashed the window and damaged the door. They had stolen some things from the car (not on show I might add).

So my car insurance has increased! How things change.

My thoughts.....the chap was picked up by the police and we have our stuff back.....still not sure why he chose my little fiat 500 from all the cars in the car park! But he only left prison on Friday and is on his way back there today. But after my initial freaking out on Saturday.....I now feel some saddenes for him......he needs some support and someone to help him. Will he get this in prison. As a psychotherapist - I feel that I should have some compassion for this chap. So I wish him my best.....and extend him my thoughts...........I only hope that justice also means rehabilitation too.

Bryan
